Pkfjtdice.?All men are apt to have a conceit of their own understanding, to be tenacious of the opinion they profess: and yet almost all men are guided by the understandings of others, not by their own; and may be said more truly to adopt than to beget their opinions. N urses, parents, pedagogues, and after them all, and above them all, the univer sal p.\iagO?ues, custom, till the mind with notions which it has no share in framing, which it receives as passively as it receives ?he impressions of outward objects, and which left to itself, it would never have framed, perhaps, or would have examined afterwards. Thus, prcju dicies are established by education, and habits by custom. We are taught to think what others think, not how to thind for ourselves; and whilst the mem ory is loaded, the understanding regains unexercised, or exercised in such tiam me as coa.-train its motions, an-1 direct its place, till that which was artificial becomes in sort natural: and the nind can go no further. It may smmd oddly, but it is true in mauy cases, to say that if men had learned less, their way to knowledge would be shorter and easier. It is, indeed, shorter and easier to p:o ceed from ignorance to knowledge, th&n from error. They who are in the last condition must unlearn, before they car. learn to any good purpose: and the first of this docile task is not, in may respects, the least difficult, for which reason it is seldom undertaken. Canvas Mail Dags. Size No. 1, (43 inches in length, an.l 62 inches in circumference,) to be made of cotton canvass, weighing 15 ounces to the yard of27 inches width; the yarn of the fabric to be doubled and twisted and five-fo'.d. Size No. 2, (41 inches in length, and 48 inches in circumference,) to be made of cotton canvass, wsijlnng 16 ounces to the yard of 27 inches width, and the cloth to be woven in every respect like that of the first size of bag*. Size No. 3, (32 inches in length and 38 inches in circumference.) to be made ol cotton canvass, weighing 10 ounces to the yaid of 22 inches width, and th ? cloth to be woven a? above described. The canvass bags of sizes No*. 1 and 2 are to be made with a sufficient number of eyelet holes, and provided with strong cord to secure their months. All are to be well and distinctly marked '4 U. S.
