EVENING STAR. f AB EWKLI. ?t rancncE. Mv snttl thy sacred image keep*, My midwght dreams are all of ihce, for namre then in silence sleeps. And silence broods o'er land and tea; Oh. in that bU'I, mysterious hour, How ott from waking dreams f start, To find thee but a fancy flower, Thou cherished idol of my heart, Thou hast each thought and dream of nune? Hare 1 m turn one thought of thine ? Torever thine my dreams will be, Wi.ats'er may be my fortune here; I a?k not lore?I claim from thee Only one boon, a gentle tea^ May t:'er blest visions fiOin above Plav brightly round thy happy heart, And may the beams of peace and lov?, Ne'er irom tliy glowing soul depart, Farewell! my dreams are still with thee. Hast thou one tender thought of me ? M%>> like summer bird* may fly, >fyih??pes like summer blossom* depart, But there'* one flower that cannot die? T hy holy memory in my heart : Xo dew* that flower's cup may All, No jiunlight to its leaves be given, But it w.ll live and flourish still. An deathleiw as a thing of heaven.^ Mv soul greets thine, uom<u<k'd, unsought, Ha?t thou for me one gentle thought? I'wtw?HI farewell! my far off ffiend! Between us broad blue rivers flow. And lorest wave, and plains extend, And mountains in the sunlight glow. The wind that ho-atiies upon the brow Is uot the wind that breathes on mine, Th? star beams shining on thee now Ate not the brains that on me shine, But memory's spell is with us yet? I anst thou the holy past forget The hitler tears that you and 1 May shed whene'er by ar ^ui?h Lowed Exhaled into the noontide sky May meet and mingle in tlie cloud; ? And thus, my much beloved friend though ws Far, tar apart must live and move, Our souls when God shall set the free, ?'an mingle m the world of love, This wa< an ecstacy to me ? Say?would it be a jov to thee ! Pkfjtdice.?All men are apt to have a conceit of their own understanding, to be tenacious of the opinion they profess: and yet almost all men are guided by the understandings of others, not by their own; and may be said more truly to adopt than to beget their opinions. N urses, parents, pedagogues, and after them all, and above them all, the univer sal p.\iagO?ues, custom, till the mind with notions which it has no share in framing, which it receives as passively as it receives ?he impressions of outward objects, and which left to itself, it would never have framed, perhaps, or would have examined afterwards. Thus, prcju dicies are established by education, and habits by custom. We are taught to think what others think, not how to thind for ourselves; and whilst the mem ory is loaded, the understanding regains unexercised, or exercised in such tiam me as coa.-train its motions, an-1 direct its place, till that which was artificial becomes in sort natural: and the nind can go no further. It may smmd oddly, but it is true in mauy cases, to say that if men had learned less, their way to knowledge would be shorter and easier. It is, indeed, shorter and easier to p:o ceed from ignorance to knowledge, th&n from error. They who are in the last condition must unlearn, before they car. learn to any good purpose: and the first of this docile task is not, in may respects, the least difficult, for which reason it is seldom undertaken.
