Rrwr.?The preservation of iron and steel from rust is a very important con sideration in domestic economy. The following plan of doing this is very little known, and 13 far superior to any other: Add to a quart of co!(f water half a pound of quickliioc; let Jhis stand until the top is perfectly clear; pour ofTthe clear liquid, and stir up with it a quantity of olive oil, until the- mixture becomcs a thick cream or assumes the consistence of but ter which has been melted for the table, and has become cold. Rub the iron or steel which is to be put by with this mixture, and then wrap it up in paper. Knives and othar steel articles treated in this vray, will not acquire the slightest rust, if the nature 01 the articles will not admit of their being wrapped up it paper, they will remain free from nisi by covering them more thickly with th< mixture.?Lady's Book. Proposals received tip to the 8th of May will be opened at noon of that day. Map*, profiles, and specifications of the work will l? ready for examination on and after the aOth day ot April next. Proposals will be received for the work of partieu lir culverts, bridges, kc., as described in the plans and specifications. Portions only of some of tliv works can be com pleted under the present appropriation, but all the contracts for unfinished work will be subject to fu ture appropriations by Congress. The Engineer re serves the right to prescribe the amount ol work tu be dona and rate of progress under such contract 0>r each appropriation, and, in case of the appro priation not holding out sufficiently, lo decide when and what works shiJI bo stopped until funds become available. In case the entire stoppage of any particular work for want of ftanUs, the reserved ten j>er tent, will be piid, if, in the judgment of the Engineer, the work has been properly executed so far it has gone.
