EVENING STAR. TO A CHILD BT I. w. LOWGHU.OW I>e?r child ! how radiant on thy mother's knee, With merry mtUn| wye a and jocund nnlles, Tht>u gas^st at the painted tiles, Wbme figures grace, With many a grotesque form and fkce, The ancient caiinnej of thy nuapery! The lady with the pay maca.v, The dancing git I, tns grave bashaw With bearded lip and chin ; And leaning idly o'er bia gate, Beneath the imperial Can of state The Chinese mandarin. With what a look of prcud command Thou ah&lteat in thy little hand The coral tattle with its silver bells, Milking a merry tunc Thousands of years in Indian seas That cer&l grew by Uow degrees, Until some deadly and wild monsoon Dashed it on Coromandel'a sand! Those si'ver belli Reposed of yore, As shapeless ore, Par down in the deep-sunken wellj Of darksome mines, la some obscure and sunless place, Bennatb tinge Chnuboraxo'.i base, Or steep Potosi's mountain pines ' And thus for thee, O little child. Through many a danger and escape, The tall ships passed the stormy cape; Por thee in foreign lar.ds rcmots, B* Heath burning, tropic clime, The Indian peasant, chasing the wild goat, Himself as swift and wild, In falling, clutched the frail a<bute, The fibres of whoec shallow mot, Uplifted from Uie Nil, betrayed The silver veins beneath it laid, The buried treasures of the miser, Time. But lol thy door is left ajar! Thou h?ar*et footsteps mm afar! And. at the sonnd Thou turnset round With quick and queotionirg eyes, Like one, who, in a foreign land, Beholds on every hand Some source of wnnder and surprise ! And, restlessly, imparieaUy, Thou strivest, stragglest, to be Irec. The four walls of thy nursery Are now like prifon walls to thee. No more thy mother's smiles, No more th- painted tiles, Delight th^e, nor the playthings on the fl-.or, That won Uiy Utile, beating heart before ; Thou suugglcst for the opeu door 0 child ! O now born denizen of life's gr?'*i city ! on thy head The giory of the morn Is sited, Like a celestial benisanl Here at the portal thou dost stand, And w ith thy little hand Thou opener the mysterious gate Into th?-future's undiscovered land. 1 see its va'ves expand, \s at tba touch of Pate ! Into ilioft realms of love aa-i hate, Into that <!arknss~ blank and drear, By s. m ? projhetic feelin* taught, I launch the br.ld, adventurous th' Uglit, Pretzhted with hope and fear ; As upon subterranean stream?, ?n cavcrns unerp!ore?l anl dark, Meu rometimes launch a fragile ba:k, La.leri with dickering fire, *n 1 watch it? swift i?.*c?J;rig beams, Until at length they disappear, And in the distant dark expire. # ? ? ? * ? $ ? Rrwr.?The preservation of iron and steel from rust is a very important con sideration in domestic economy. The following plan of doing this is very little known, and 13 far superior to any other: Add to a quart of co!(f water half a pound of quickliioc; let Jhis stand until the top is perfectly clear; pour ofTthe clear liquid, and stir up with it a quantity of olive oil, until the- mixture becomcs a thick cream or assumes the consistence of but ter which has been melted for the table, and has become cold. Rub the iron or steel which is to be put by with this mixture, and then wrap it up in paper. Knives and othar steel articles treated in this vray, will not acquire the slightest rust, if the nature 01 the articles will not admit of their being wrapped up it paper, they will remain free from nisi by covering them more thickly with th< mixture.?Lady's Book.
