Judd the following striking thought occurs: He preached a sermon from the text, 44 His mother made him a little coat."? (1 Sam. ii., 19.) Passing from the letter to the spirit, he speaks of clothing for the mind and the soul, and endeavors to impress mothers that they should be more solicitous about suck little coats than for the fashions and frock-jackets, or other garments for the body. " I meet a man in the streets liteially clothed in rags, clothed also with mani fold tokens of a depraved life. I ask, 4 Did his mother, when young, make hffh a little coat ?' 44 When I see a person clothed in hu mility, entertaining a modest sense of himself, reverent of truth?his mother made for him a little coat. 44 These coats last a long time. Chil dren shall wear them when parents are dead ; they shall wear them in distant lands ; that old family style shall show itself in many places and times. What sort of clothes are you makiag for your children? Is their vesture wisdom or folly ? Is it the true beauty of good ness, or a poor imitation from the dra pers ? "Your words, your acts, go to make up this clothing. Something you did yesterday becomes part of a garment your child must wear many years. " Young mother, a naked spirit comes to your hands as well as a naked body. You have prepared clothing for the last; shall the first go denuded, picking up what it may wear at baphasArd ? is the THE WEEKLY STAB. rnpiM.... Ten 4o?. Swift Ptiusttmbnt for Robbing a Woman.?This morning, as Aura. F. Prime was passing down Broadway, when near Chambers street, her pocket was picked of her portmonnaie, contain ing a check on the Union Bank for $136, which she was going to the bank to have cashed, and some two dollars in money. A little girl who was near her at the time, informed her that she saw a little bey with his hand in her pocket. Mrs. Prime, on discovering her loss, immedi ptely went to the Union Bank and in uned theinof her loss, requesting them n^c to pay the che^k. About an hour afterwards a man made his appearance at the paying teller's desk and presented the stolen check for payment. He was iiiiu.ciiia.tely arrested by officer Reifiela, cf the Ninth distiict, who had been called i't for the purpose. He gave his name as J^nios \N aid and stated he had only been in this country about three weeks. He was committed in default of $500 bail. A. Y. Post of Tuesday. Ukmp Hose ?The chief engineer has received from the manufacturer at Phila delphia o.>2 feet of hose manufactured from Ameiican hemp, weighing 120 lbs. without the butts. He is now waiting for a like quantity about to be furnished bv the agent of the French hemp hose. \\ hen both are received they will be marked so as to distinguish them apart, the lengths then mixed together, and used by some company in the lower dis tricts?either No. 28 or No. 8, we pre sume. A census has recently been taken, says the Los Angeles Star, within the city limits of Sa > Bernardino, and the result, as ascerta'ned, numbers one thousand be longing to the Mormon church and three hundred Gentiles, or outsiders. Several families removed to Salt Lake City last week. The Mormons are daily expect ing the arrival at San Pedro of a 6hip from Aust-alia with a load of proselytes gathered into the folds of that country. A fast people these Mormon fnends of ours; thev do not consider their work accomplished when conversion is effected, but they make sure of future steadfast ness of the brethren by drawiDg them within the influences of a community of interests nnd feelings, where their tem poral, as well as their spiritual wants are attentively wats'ued and provided for. Xy^Tne Duke and Dutchess de Mont pensier have recently caused the old con vent of La Rabida, near Cadi*, in which Christopher Columbus resided on his re turn Iroai his first voyage, to be repaired. On the completion of the repairs the Duke and Duchess attended the celebra tion of mass in the chapel of the con vent, and at .ei wards partook of break fast in the ce'l which the great navigator had occupied. In the cell are paintings executed by order of the Duke, repre senting Columbus begging bread and water at the door of the convent for his son, giving the monks an account of his discoveries, the reading of the royal de cree in the church of Palos, authorising him to raise men and equip vessels for a new voyage, his taking leave of the prior of the convent, and lastly, a full-length portrait of him. Thb Florida Indians.?The steamer Fashion, of New Orle*ns, from Tampa Bay, reports that the troops at Fort Du rand have all been removed to Fort Mey ers on account of sickness. The troops have visited during the first part of tne year several of the Indian towns in the feigCypress and found them deserted. The Indians seldom visit the pe)st, but are peaceable. The expedition un^er command of Capt. Pratt to Malco River and Cape Roman had returned to Fort Meyers, saw no Indians. Tne expedition under command of Lieutenant Benson, which had started for an exploring ex pedition of Lake Okeechobee had also re turned.
