THE riFTH BOOK OF SAMUEL, THE SCBIBE UNTO THE MESCUEIAV8. CHAPTER I. 1. To your tents, O, Mercurians. '?Greeks" and "Sour-Krouts!" for "Sam" is about, yea, even in your very midst. 2. The Wise men of the South did en compass him round about, and they smote him on the right cheek and on the left, and "Samuel" hastily departed ? for the courage abided not in him. 3. Now "Samuel'' straightway re paired to the city of Penn, and there as sembled in secret conclave his Chief Priests and Scribes, and uato them he made sad lamentations. 4. For he was way worn and weary, and sorely vexed in spirit; for the "l*n terr.fied, south of the line called Mason & Dixon's, did handle him?without mittens! 5. And when he had related unto his Chief and Scribes the evils that had be fallen him, and the dangers through which he had pass.d in the 44 land of the Woolly Heads," they gnashed their teeth and cried aloud vengeance. 6. Ihen did Robert, whose surname is 44 Cade" the chiefest "Know Nothing" of them all, wax exceeding wroth, and? speechify prodigiously ! 7. But the odor from the vials of his wrath overcame his weak nerves, and theie being no stimulants in the council chamber of 44 Sam," Robert had?a s//asm! 8. And when the disciples of 44 Sam," who had assemb'ed from the North and the South, the East and the West, and the Island called Tinicum, beheld* what had happened unto Robert, they straight way adjourned? 9. Some to the house of Bridges & West, the publicans, and others to the bowers ol'the modern Delilah's, where "strangers are taken in." CHAPTER II. 1% And it came to pass on the morrow that "Sam" sounded the tomj-jhn, and straightway his anointed again gathered round about him. 2. And from the hearts of the 44 faith ful there went up a prayer of thanks giving and praise?an olfering for the deliverance of their prophet out of the hands of the Virginians. 0. Now among the chosen of " Sam" in council assembled, were Barkers, Picks, Prentices, Gardners, Nightin gales, Brooks, Churches, Parsons, Cranes, Pyles, Cones, Slaughters, Cooks, Butts, Cases, Bells, Sharps, (Hats,) Lyons, lloags, Pikes, and other odd tish.'who spouted like whales, for ?pints moved them powerfully. 4. And Alb:it, the mighty 44 Poick"cf the West^kdriHng the praiiejii^Sam," and Gcfr^e, of 44 Old Ivintuek,an3?Ken n^th of the 44 old North State," did whis tle in chorus?most beautifully ! 5. '1 hen arose Barker. Ch ef Priest from the city of Gotham, who hoiclcd long and piteou^ly; then sat himself down?and jtrc spired. 6. Then followed William and John, and Joseph, and Thaddeus, and Darnel theGothamite, who glorified 44Sam,"and cried aloud?44 crucify the Pope !" 7. And suddenly there arose a great commotion in the camp of44 Samuel." 8. The 4'Dough-faces" clamored loudly and the "Fire-eaters" waxed exceedingly wroth. 9. But the 44 Tooth-Pick" of Arkansas, and the 44 Persuader" of Colt, caused a change to come over the spirit of rebell ion, and the belligerents became suddenly docile. 10. Then straightway the council fires were extinguished, and 41 Samuel" com manded his disciples to depart in peace? and they obeyed his command. CHAPTER III. 1. Now it came to pass on the evening of tko fifth day of the week (known in those days as Thursday,) that the fatted calf was killed, and a great least was pre pared, unto which the Chief Piiests of 44 bum" were invited. 2. And they partook freely, without money and without pi ice. 3. But from all others who partook thereof, there was demanded ten pieces ol silver, lawful currency of the realm. 4. But the 44 Greeks'' and the 44 Sour Krouts" would not contribute a dim*? no, not a single red! o. Now, at this fea*t, prepared by Thomas the Ethiop, presided Robert, as sisted by Benjamin, Charles, Joseph and John. C. And the viands prepared by Thomas vanished rapidly; and the wines, brandy, whisky and gin?the spirit ofi'ering of Jacob, whose surname is Snider, did dis appear?moat mysteriously. 7. And straightway Robert waxed ex ceedingly eloquent?delivered himself a speech, and departed. 8. Then followed Kenneth, James, Elihu, and Judson, who declaimed most vehemently. 9. And the ,4 faithful" did clap their hand3 and cry aloud, 44 Sam" is great, and Judson is his prophet! 10. But the speech of Judson pleased not the 44 Greeks" and 44 Sour-Krouts," and they did hiss?slightly. 11. Now this did vex 44 Sam" sorely ; but the 44 Unterrified" hcedtd him not, and did continue to annoy him. 12. Now when 44 Samuel" found that he was again encompassed round about by the Philistines, he immediately de parted from their presence. 13. And straightway his disciples im itated the example of their master ; for their heads did ache and their knees trembled violently. 14. Finally, my brethren, whether Know Nothings, Greeks, or Sour-Krouts, be ye circumspect in all things. Remem ber that the way of the Politician is hard, his labors great, and his emolu ments small: therefore, eschew politics and cleave unto piety, thus making your burdens lighter and your chances ol sal vation mrv cgruin, fcelah! C\att Smith, ? letter from an African Prince. His name ii not at all unpronouncable, and is considerably re moved from being poetic. It is Charles G Tucker, lie is a natural son of old King Tucker, widely known for his mer cantile transactions in live Africans. The letter is decidedly of the Connecticut or Massachusetts pattern. Writing, spell ing. stjle, ink, and paper, are Christian and American, and not in the least de gree upon the Geld Coast model. This royal fruit informs Mr. Smith that he is now studying ' Geography, Colbura's Arithmetic, Grammar, Astronomy, and Dictionary." lie adds to this intelli gence the humble expression of a wish that Mr. S. will pray for him "to get a knowledge of all those studies." The Prince is training under the care of the Mendi Missionaries. Neighbors to the Mendis in Africa are the Shebroa. The latter live upon the Coast?fish a little, grow a little rice, make a little salt, but mainly rely upon the Slave Trade for their subsistence? stealiag not a little NiMr, but a great many big ones. The ^ndis living in the interior are a superior race. They are uncuwed with Slavery, and are ah industrious and thrifty people. They have a funny and yet interesting tra dition among them, accounting for and amiably excusing the indolence of their brother Shebros. As related by Miss Woolscy, of the Mission, it is thus : "When God cieated Man, he began with the white man very early in the morn ing, and when He had" given him his hands and feet. lie said, "Now, my 8on, you have a long day before you. You must learn letters, learn to make all ships, all kinds of tools. All kinds of animals you must make work for you." "So when it came noon, God came down from Heaven one time more, and He say, 'now I make Mendi man.' So when Mendi man stand on his feet, lie ^ay, 'now. my sou, you must work too. The sun up good ways yet. You inako axe, you plant trees, plant rice, work till night." Yet once more, when the sun low, most down, God come and say, now I make Shebro man.' When She bro man stand on his feet, He say, 'mr son, it is night now; sun is down, I got no work for you; so you must fish, and make salt, till I come down some day and sot you to work."?Buffalo D$ mocrary. The King of PsrssiA Nox-Scttid ijc a St. Lous Court. ?Some time since his Majesty, Frederick William IV., King of Prussia, brought his action in the Circuit Court of St. Lcuis, against Felix Cosie, administrator of Frederick William Kup per, claiming 7,4l)U thalers. moneys al leged to have been embezzled by the de ceased from the post-office of the King, which moneys belonged to the various subjects of the King, and were, after the embezzlement, reimbursed by the King to the parties who were sufferers by the embezzlement of Kupper. The petition of the King alleged that he is an absolute monarch of the kingdom of Prussia, and as King thereof is the sole government of that country; that he is unrestrained by any constitution or law, and that his will, expressed in due fjrrn, is the only law of that couutry, and is the only le*al power there known to exist as law: that by the law of Prus sia auy iuonoy, or its equivalent, sent through the Post Department of Prus sia, if lost or stolen, is to be refunded to the owner by the King. Kupper, it ap pears, was r postmaster in Prussia, and absconded with the money committed to his care in 1849. He came to St. Louis, and die 1 the same year, when Ocste be came his administrator. The case was ably argued. The court held that the petition did not show any cause of action at common law; that the payment of the money to the true owners, by the King, did not at com mon law authorize the King to recover it of the defendant; and that this court had no jurisdiction over the questions as to the extent of the powers of the King of Prussia in his sovereign capacity; to cre ate a legal liability against a party by the excercise of his will in any form; or as to the power of the King, as a sover eign, to decree; that Kupper was liable to pay him as a sovereign, that while the King could sue in this court in his cor porate capacity waiving his sovereignity, for the recovery of any demand recog nised by our laws, yet in a case like the present, the action is based upon the powers of the King as a sovereign of a foreign State, he must prosecute the claim before the tribunal having the sole jurisdiction of such questions, and a State court cannot take cogniianco of thejQ. The judgment was rendered for ths defendant. Loss op a Wife.?'* The death of an old man'8 wife," saya Lamartine, "is like cutting down an ancient oak that has long shaded the family mansion. Hence forth the glare of the worl?l, with its care and vicissitudes, falls heavily upon the widower's heart, and there is noth ing to break their force, or shield him from the full weight of misfortune. It is as if his right hand was withered, is if one wing of an eagle was broken, and every movement that he made brought him to the ground. Ilis eyes are dim and glassy, and when the film of death falls over him, he misses those accus tomed tones which might have smoothed his passage to the grave." (TTThe less a man knows, the more noise he makes. Attend a public meet ing, and you will always see that the man who contrives to upset the stove is some ignoramus, who thinks that tho more you swear a* a horse, the better he will draw. [y Do good to your friend, that he may be more wholly yours ; to your en emy that he xuay become your friesd.
