My Dear Sir? Strange as it may appear, nevertheless, oo true be it, amid your nnmereus correspondents you have none from this piaea who regularly, or at reasonable intervals, gives you a " eonp d'ttll" ct ths poosing events, or personages, protty or interesting, of he community. Now 1 can hardly imagine there s so groat a lack of food for your unique journal, but rather that a degree of inertness has taken poosession ef yonr friends. Yon have an Agent in town, who is very eivil and attentive, and appearo to be doing a fair busiaeM. We have two daily papers here, and both conducted by bachelors. Now as I am of your opinion, that not only the press in its tone, but its editors, should promote the public weal, and be good examples in every important light, they are not fit to forward, although perhaps (they may fancy they possess the inclination) calculated to seek the fair interests of the city. In the wsy ef public amusement we are generally pretty quiet, but at present we have the theatre opened, under the good management of Mr Forbes* with a good stock company, performing to tolerably well filled houses. Mrs Fitzwilliams and Buckstone arrived last night from Charleston, and wi" draw crowds of the gay and great. The private society is very good, and has had quite an acquisition in some eight or ten young ladies, who this year have made their debut, and a morefascinating bery even your queen eity eannot produce ; besides, we have generally during ihe winter, a large iuflux of strangers, who try the benefits of tbe southern climat not as Grace Harkaway, in " London Assurance ' says, ler the sake of "consumptive estates," but actual ill health, or to avert it. They enjoy one advantage which travellers often repine at?1 mean comfort. The Paln>ki House is far famed as one of the most elegant establishments in the States, and unsurpassed for the quiet gentility of its arrangements, and courteous deportment of its proprietor. Marriages are very rare, only occurring, as a general thing, when astray beau, in search of health or pletsare, makes his appearance, or the young laHies evince their charms in a summer tonr.
