AUGUST 4, )rase Many of the mort sensible f ou o northern con temporarief express Inach surprie, that while h their neighboring cities suffer from heat and sick. nels, New Orleans--lheir long eohnidered home, should enjoy such extreme health, and comparative comfort. For their eurpriese there are many res *onl: no stories being too absurd for such journals at as she Philadelphia Ledger to tell of no and ourl, and consequeonty for their believers to swallow. For our present staae of health and comfort, there y ere two main ernea beyond the improved clecali. b ones, and increased pavements of our treets. 'he ti more impovtent of theme, is the lateness of our w rainy eeasoen It is the opinion of some intelligent v physicians, that unltH our neighlbring swamps can be nt onse, and completely clearpd, and drain ed, it were better for the gendral health that they should be uhbmerged. The reaso is. evident. When the swImps are dry at the fall of the let, v the metarinb'c neqsent on vegetable decomposi tion b.ings sickness sad sufleripgt but if they be, filled with water, the leaf falls harmlesely, and eve0 the hot'rays of our fervid sun produce little or no mismas. A dryt spring end wet summer answer this purpose admirably, aend with then we have been this year peculiarly blest. The daily copious rains with which we are now visited, not only serve to counteract infection, but to cool the airl-a consequence which is no lons a luxury thean. Sa bleseing, as our suffering friends in the north Saend east would fully apprecinte. With this weather we have generally a prevalence of southerly and easterly winds, which arrive here freighted with the healthful and invigorating breezes of the gulf; Saend thus, while New York, in lt. 40 440 N. and long. 74 0 45 W. is suffering severely from heat, .a which greatly increases he mortelity. New Orleans in let. 29 67 N. end long. 90 8 W. enjoys an unnsual and extraordinary exemption from a sickness, with a eemparatively cool ageesable atmosphere. Whe n westerly or northerly winds prevail, though the thermometer be lower the 1 atmosphere is more oppressive: the skin is dry, and fever common. But from east, as far as S W. the wind blows infection from us, opens the pores, 4 relieves the system, and if it brings heat, to does it health also. MNashvilke Roilroad.--This noble work it prb-o greasing with great rapidity. In the course of this [ month abetrains will reach the Lake,,a distance of 14 miles and travel some distance along its shore. A house of entertainment is about to be erected at the spot where the road strikes the far stretch. ing Lake, end whose covered piazza is to project over to its waters. This will be a vast sceommo' dation tolvisitors, and will form a most agreeable stopping place, having the spacious Prairie behind and the Lake in front, uninterrupted in view, un disturbed in stillness. Skirting the shell banks of I Pontehartrain the road, we understand, will reach La Branche's plantation 20 miles away, by the month of November, and confident expectations are entertained that it will touch Pass Manqhae by the end of March. When this desirable point I is attained the entire trade of Lake Maurepas will doubtless pass down the road, as instead of occu pying from 3 or4 days in its progress to town the produce will arrive in two hours. Fire wood will then be reduced full $3 per cord: timber $15 per thousand, and vegetables, poultry, eggand but. ter, fully 50 per cent. EXCURSION OVER THE LAKE. A delightful trip may be mades to.morrow. The Mazeppa leaves the rail road on the arrival of the seven o'clock cars and arrives at Bay St. Louis lshortly after It, then calls at Pass Christian, Biloxi, and East and Wlet Pascagoula. She will leave Pa.l Christian and Bay St. Louis between 9 and 10 in the evening, and land her passengers at the rail road in time for the earliest cars on Mon day morning. The Mazeppa is one of the plea santest boats on the Lake, and is commanded by Captain Griffin, one of its very best pilots: the passage is very modeamte, and the fare on board excellent, but a splendid dinner will be prepared at Pass Christian, under the charge of that'eucellent caterer Raymun, whose attention and skill give so much satisfaction to all the visitors at the Pass A large party is alruadydrranged, and all who wish a pleasaant trip, and a healthful recreation, should join the excursion. "Oh the rooast beef of old England." , It will cost as much it appears to clear off the is barnacles from the bottom of the ship "Nathaniel looper" which were there before she ran on shore as to repair the damage done by getting on Nan. tucket Shoal. If so, it is perhaps to be lamented t that she got offm soon. 'A little more rubbing in of the sand might have saved expenses. td A fellow in New York calling himself Charles . W Page, of New Orleans, has swindled Mr. S. T. ,t Tobias, of that city, out of $1206 worth of gold watches. He weho would keeep a watsh must two thing do : Pocket his watch, and wtelte hA pocket too. Corontion Items and Ineident.-The members of the Commons were in their places at nine. To secure perfect fairness in the allotment of places in the Abbey, precedence was balloted for by counties. On a county being called, its members left the Hall, and repaired to the Abbey.-St. Margaret's Churchyard abutting the western en trance ofthe Abbey wa filled with seats and galA leries like titose of an amphitheatre. Seats were let from 10s. to two guineas each. The h.mmer cloth of the Queen's carriage vas of scarlet silk Genoa velvet, embroidered with gold, cords, toe; elsl, &c. of the same material. Its value £1000. -Galleries in frnt of buildings and the buildings themselves, on the route, were profusely orna mented and covered with appropriate tmuttoee. A hundred instruments, and two hundred ehlrist. ere executed the music in the Abbey, which was sublime beyond imagination. The Interior of the Abbey was magnificently litted up, and we notnce its decorations remained tlmany days afterward, to give those an opjportunity to judge what tlte sene might have beren, who could not procure places to witness it. The ntonulentt in tlhe aisles were cased to prevent injury. The platform or theatre on which the inthrunalion took place was co vered with the richest cloth of goldl,as were the steps leading to it. Th'ite chlristers were strplic ed, and wore red hoods-the instrumental per formers dressed in scarlet. The comrnlotse, tlle nobility, and indeed all present, formed al"mass of glittering grandeur." The Fair in Hyde Park commenced two or three days before ite coronation. Nearly one thousand booths were erected, and durintt tlte day hunldreds of thousandsvisited the Park.Theatres were erect. ed,swinge put up,donkey races run, and in the eve. ning splendid fireworks were let off. Illutminations with all sorts of devices, were the order of the night, not only over London, but over every city and town in the three kingdoms. At the prisons, hospitals, poor houses, &c. the inmates were re galed by public and private munificence. At a concert given by Victoria, Marshal Soult met Lord Hill, one of the dtstinguished English Generals .whom he pursued so long a time in Por. tugal without capturlng. H AY'S LINIMENT.-No Fiction.-This ex. traordinary chemical composition, the result of science, and the invention of a celebrated medi. cal man, the introduction of which to the public was invested with the solematty of a deathbed bequest, has since gained a reputation unparalleled, fIlly sustaining the correctness of the lanmented Dr Gridley's last confession, that " he dared not die without giving to posterity the benefit of hIis r knowledge on this subject," and lie therefore baqueathed to his fliend and attendant, Solomon liays, the secret of his discovery. It is new used in the principal hospitals, and the private practice in' our country, first and most certainly for the cure of the Piles, and so exten Ssively and effectually as to baule credulity, unless where its effects are witnessed Externally in the following complaints: For Dropsy-Creating extraordinary absorption at once.
