EVENING STAR. LOCAL INTELLIGENCE. Accidental Death ob Homicide ?We un derstand that another dead body wad found in the Chesapeake and Ohio Canal, at lock No. 13, about ten miles above Georgetown, on Tuesday. An inquest was held onWednes day morning, before Mr. Offutt, justice of the peace. Though the jury was necessarily sum moned rather hastily, there were pome of the most respectable men in the neighborhood upon it. Witnesses were examined, but though some of them thought they had seen the man before yet they were not able to name him. and at the time of the inquest the body had become too much disfigured for recognition The dress seemed to indicate that he was an Irish laborer, and the jury concluded that he was one of the men employed upon the aque duct. or in search of employment there, who had became intoxicated at some of the low groggerie* established along the canal, and in attempting to cross on the lock, quite proba bly after dark, had fallen in and thus misera bly perished. The jury took occasion to express their dis approbation of the practice of leasing lands for the establishment of these groggeries, and their opinion of the injury which has already resulted to the community and to the works from this practice. This is. if we remember rightly, the siztJt body which has been found in the canal, along the lino of the aqueduct, this season. Most of these deaths are trace able directly to the sale of liquor to the men. Much of the sickness among the hands is at tributed to the same cause. The men getting drunk lie out exposed to the night dews and f?-s, and thus fall easy victims to the miasma. Many of the landed proprietors to their honor be it spoken, have refused to lease lands for tho salo of liquor. Others, and among them residents of this city, bare permitted it. The names of some of them were brought out in the evidence before the coroner's jury in this cue. Could they have been present and wit nessed the feeling with whicn their conduct was viewed by all who saw their victim, we believe they would have left that scene deter mined to purge themselves from such a stain. The keeper u? one of these groceries, estab lished upon|land owned by an officer employed in cne of the departments, was present at the inquest. Will he see that bloated, blackened face in his dreams ? * The Distress in Gosport and Portsmouth. A gentleman who is well acquainted with those localities, says that all tne inhabitants whose circumstar.ccs would admit have left them for healthy vicinities, and estimates that there cannot be less than two thousand persons, who, in consequence of the yellow fever now prevalent, are in a state of "suffer ing. We doubt not the truth of his statement, for many persons have been thrown out of employment, and business of necessity only is transacted. The country people do not bring their produce to market; and. as may natur ally be supposed, there are many other sources of complaint. The utmost consternation ex ists, and darkness and gloom mark all the transactions. Funerals without mourners, and want and disease in many a household. We repeat, that not a few persons are suffer ing for the common necessaries of life, and for want of j>roper medical and nursing attend ance. No voice that we have heard has yet come hither from Gosport and Portsmouth, but, in view of the ifflictive circumstances, the extent of which every one can conceive, we would respectfudy suggest thai the philan thropic of this as well as of other cities take the matter at once into serious consideration, in order that a helping hand may be extended to our neighbors in distress. At present the Sisters of Mercy and Charity, whose praises are on the lips of all there, arc the only min istering angels of the afflicted. Educational.?It will be seen, by refer ence to our advertising columns, that the next session of that time-honored institution, the Georgetown College, will commence on the third of September, offering rare inducements for students desirous of a thorough education. The Georgetown Female Seminary. Re*. WiJiam J. Clark, principal, will commence its annual session on the third of September. This gentleman occupies the premises formerly in possession of Miss English, and is her wor thy successor. * The duties of the Select Classical and Math ematical Academy, P. A. Bowen. principal, will be resumed on the above-named day Ilis residence is at No. y4 West street, George town. The Female Seminary?M A. Tyson and Sifters?will be re-opened on the 15th of Sep tember for day pupils, and for boarding schol ars on the first of November. Nuisances.?A subscriber, in person, re quests us to call the attention of the city au thorities to the filthy condition of D street, be tween Ninth and Tenth streets, occasioned by the accumulation of kitchen offal and slops. On north A, between First and Second streets. Capitol Hill, there is a filthy pool?of stagnant water?which, when it rains, over flows and floods the basements of houses in that vicinity. This nuisance, a correspondent rep resents. is now in a condition to give the neigh bors fever and ague, and to promote the yel low fever or the cholera. In fact, there is a general complaint of filth all over the city. It seems almost useless to call the attention of the city authorities to sach nuisances. They appear to be deaf as adders. Accident.?As the hose reel of the Colum bia Fire Company was passing along Pennsyl vania avenue last night, during the alarm of fire, it was run ag-iinst by a man who was riding a race with another. The horse was thrown and hurt, a wL*?ol of the hose carriage smashed, a lad named Throop injured severely about the head and l'acc. and Mr John B. Bryan, a member of the fire company, badly hurt. The rider was thrown from the horse, but recovered immediately, and was off before an officer had an opportunity to a.rest him under the corporation law. Tho cost of the repairs necessary to be done to the hose reel will be'about sixty dollars. The Excursion, yesterday, of the Young Catholic s Fri< ud Society is represented to us as having been trul^ a pleasant affair, and the company at the White House on that occa sion larger probably than any other during the present season. Two boats were necessary to oonvey the pleasurers to and from that pop ular place of resort?the last one not return ing uutil midnight. Dancing to the musio of a fine band, swinging, eating, and singing, were the principal amusements. Quite a hand some sum was realized in aid of the benevo lent objects of the society. Yesterday Evening, while a party of three ladies and a gentleman were enjoying them selves ath a ride in tho northwestern part of the city?the weather pleatant and the road excellent?the front of the carriage came out with so loud a crash as to alarm persons living in the neighborhood for their safety. They, however, sustainedlno personal damage, and, rather than risk their lives in the shattered vehicle, preferred to walk home, a distance of near'y a mile. A sad nx?There is probably no gentleman who would not consider himself in a bad fix if, in traveling through the country with his wife and sister, putting up at the principal hotels, "driving round in style1' at all the fa vorite places of resort, he should find that he had forgotten his financial arrangements, and had his baggage " collared" in default of pay ing his board bill. A case of this sort recently occurred in Washington, much to the dis pleasure of the landlord. Alarm or Fire.?Last night. about 9o'clock, the alarm bells at the engine-houses were ringing, and the firemen were out from the various sections of the city looking for the cause of alarm. Finally they ascertained that it ?as eausmi by the explosion of a quantity of eamphene, with which a gentleman, who resides at the corner of Seventh and E streets, was filling a lighted lamp in an upper room of his dwelling No damage was done except to the gentleman, who was burnt by the blasng fluid Eastess District.?Justice Bates disposed of the following oases to-day Win. Murphy and Patrick Harvey, for assault and battery on Dennis 0 Neil and wife, were sent to ja:l for curt; Mi hat I Kennedy, for creating a Cuisance, was fined and costs. Extra Attraction !?T. L. Floyd, (Miss Fanny,) of th? Kunkel Opera Troupe, will take a benefit tn-night, at Udd Fellow?' Hall, nrecenting a rich projramme. He will pro duce the new laughable farce of the " B!ack Statue, or the King of Clubs." The Well* Children, too, will sing some of their choicest ieces. The new and popular song of 4 Bob in around," ?ung by Mrs. W. J. Florence for a succession of twenty-four nights at the Holliday street Theatre, Baltimore, will be sung, en costume. by J. W. Adams. Alto gether, it is the richest bill of the season, and the popular artist will doubtless be greeted with an overflowing house. As Exciting Scene was witnessed at the White House wharf yesterday, and which, for a time, interrupted the festivities of the com pany attending the Young Catholics' Friend Society's excursion to that place. It was oc casioned by a boy, aged seven years, a son of Mr. O'Me&ra, falling into the water; ho hav ing been running without taking heed to his ways. A colored man named William Ford, who fortunately happened to be near by at the time of the accidcnt. at the risk of bis own life, saved that of tho child, and restored him to his parents, in a dripping condition to bo sure, but nevertheless uninjured in body. It may be conceived that the joy of the company was great, in consequence. This was the only event that interrupted the delightful pro ceedings. ?? [COMMUNICATED. Clement L. West, Esq.?The numerous friends of this young architect feel a more than ordinary gratification in the very hand some compliment paid to his genius and talent, by the faculty of Princeton College, in confer ring upon him the degree of A. M. It is the meed of merit well bestowed. His unobtru sive manners, quiet deportment, and gentle manly bearing, evince, under all circum stances, tho substantial worth of the man, and promise a life of usefulness to his country and of honor to himself. Another Excursion.?The George Wash ington Club, a band of young men of our sis ter city of Georgetown, advertise an excursion to the White House and a pic nic, oil Wednes day tho 15th instant, as will be seen by refer ence to another column. The well-known character of the club is a sufficient guarantee that everything will be done by them to ren der the trip pleasant and agreeable. A Pleasant Resort.?Mr. Charles Light becker has leased the Spring Garden, formerly Favier's, on M street, between Seventeenth and eighteenth street*, and. by enterprise and personal attention, promises to make it a plea sant resort. John Dougherty was this morning commit ted to jail by Justice Clarke, in default of se curity for peace; his offence consisted of an assault with a hatchet on a Mr. Smith, a keep er of a livery stable. "Nicols." and other operatic stars on the American stage, and to "Mario" ahd other. of recent date, but no one of them all, in the power tocaptivate and carry away the feeling* of the auditor, was equal to our unkuown vocalist, who has for several seasons conferred delight on one resident at least in Eighteenth Strhet. The Soiree and Pic-nic of the B?>onc Club on Tuesday night at the Spring Gardens, (late A. Favier's.) now kept by C. Leightbeker, was a most delightful affair f the kind, a represented to us. The arrangements were all admirable; the dancing was on a large floor constructed in the open air for the par ticular purpose, and th'?ge who like to shake the "Jight fantastic toe" had ample opportu nity of doing so. The music. Fischer's Band, was admirable, the refreshments excellent, and the hostess, in the absence of h?r husband, proved herself not only willing but perfectly able to provide for the wi>hes of her gue-ts on such an occasion, and contributed much to the universal hilarity.. The fair sex particularly enjoyed themselves, many of them till broad daylight, and went home, escorted by their beaux in the morning. Success to the Boone Club, and abundant success to the Leight beckers in their enterprise. * Watch Returns.?There were, last night, several lodgers at the guard-house, who were discharged at an early hour this morning. The only case for trial was Thomas Harris, colored, who, for profanity, was seat to the workhouse for thirty days. GEORGETOWN CORRESPONDENCE. Georgetown, August 10. 1955. We tave heard nothing since our letter oi Tuesday from the break upon tho canal, neai Mercersville. We presume, however, that thi damage is very nearly repaired, as tho Chiel Engineer gave it as his opinion that iteould certainly be rendered passable in ten days oi two weeks from the time the accident occurred. It may b? possible that some of the Cumber land boats have received information of its being nearly or quite completed, as we saw several of them bound up this morning. Judson Mitchell, Esq.. was nominated last night by the Know Nothings for tho vacant seat in the Board of Aldermen. This is the current rumor this morning, and ad it comes from members of that party, we presume it is correct. Mr. M. is an active and energetic business man. and would doubtless make a very excellent corporation legislator. We think, however, thai if both parties are true to themselves?that is, if the opponents of Know Nothingism are as thoroughly organ ised as the Know Nothings, and give to Mr. Beall the same undivided support that will be given to Mr M by those who have nominated him?there can be no doubt as to the final re sult. We are pretty well satisfied, from all we can learn, ihat the Know Nothings do not count among their membership over two hun dred and thirty to fifty votes, and as the whole vote of the town is nearly, if not quite, six hundred, a united effort upon the part of the friends of Mr. Bjall will secure his eluetion by a handsome majority. Messrs. Amy A hhinn has purchased of^Ir. William Emert. the property now occupied by them as a mineral water and bottliug de pot, for Sl.bOO. This property fronts 80 feet on Green, and 100 feet on Olive streets, and was purchased by Mr. E., a few years since, if we mistake not, for S1.0U0. The enterpri sing gentlemen who have just purchased it. intend, at some future day, greatly toinprovc the premises by enlarging, and building high er the houses, so as to give them two good dwel lings, in addition to thair bottling establish ment, which will occupy the cellar and first floor. The flour market remains verv quier, stock, receipts and sales very light. Held this morn ing at $9a$9.12J for new and old. The re ceipts of wheat are unusually light for the season. This is owing, we are informed by the larmers, to the want of suitable weather for getting it out. The continuation of wot weather has prevented most of them irotn doing any thing of moment r.s yet. Prices have advanced from 5 to 8 cents ; selling this morning at $1 80a$187* for white, and SI.75 aS1.80 for red. Corn 90c. A cargo of oat* offered yesterday at 40 cents ; not sold .
