Them wiw be | t ween Are and six hundred ladies in.l gentlemen present. : The festivities of tbs evening commenced and terminated with dancing, there being an intermission of aa hour or more for ? upper and speeches appropriate to thn occasion. About 11 o'clock the whole company proceeded to the ?upper, where, after partaking of the good thing* spread before them by Mr. Bell, the Superintends of the Chi nese Assemble Rooms, they enjoyed a least of reason in the speeches anil toasts. Dr Hall presided and read tbe toast*, which were in ter?persed with tnurnc by the band. Tbe I'twioBT made the opening address. Hs com nenccd by speaking of the fathers of the Revolution and the great services which they rendered not ooJy to their country but the whole hu'rasn race. Civilization was extending, and even tellginn, and clergymen wen. becoming Christian. Iheir character was approximating tbe prin clple* of Paine. who believed that there wax but one J.od, and v. hot e religion was to do go-id. His deflni tion of infidelity, he said, wits professing to believe hi ?D::'Jld"ot twll'?ve- ?"? doctrine in this respect did not differ from that of the more enlightened sect* of the present age The object wss to simplify the great truths ot the Divinity and free them from the obscurity in which the mini-tern of the chunh Involved them These teachers would ttad It to their interest to conform more to hia principles; and when they prevailed throughout the earth, the cms-., instead of being the emblem of perse cutlon would be regarded as the emblem of peace and good will to all men. The day would come when tbe great man, whose birthday they were asaeinble I to cele brate, would he enrolled on the list of those who bad conferred a benefit on their race. Dr. Hull concluded by giving the flist and second toasts, as follows ? Thomas I'aine ? The author of the American Revolution ?the disinterested patriot ? the noMe philanttropist? the clear expounder of liberal snd republican principles Departed I iberals? They have done their duty. Mr Pj?,k responded totbeiecond tosst. He' believed there were many at the present day who were read? to sacrifice themselves for the promotion and in defence of liberal principles, as tbere were in the days of Thomas raine aid his compatriots. He felt encouraged wheu he looked upon the large aaaemby before him. and he telt convinced the liberal party was increasing in numbers. He was proud too, when he retlected what had been done in behalf of those principles, and how much had blen effected towards the complete regeneration of the humau race. The apostles of tbe cause to which Paine dsroted lii? whole life knew that the day had arrived when the old tites and sujierstitiou, which had so long held n an in bondage would fee .umbered uinong the tilings thai were, and a brigift dur would shine upon the world. Tbev knew this, and they toiled unceasing ly, satisfied that posterity would do their memorv in-. tice ami their names would be reverb as the true' bene factors of mankind. They professed the isligion of I aine. wlncli was to do good to all mankind. flThe l'r?sident gave the third regular toast as follow* ? ? Education, the Key of Knowledge. He expressed his belief sunt the worU of the Reformation would be left incom plete if it had not been for tbe press, and ha was of the opinion that, pursued to it* ultimate extent, Protestant inn led to infidelity. He referred alao to the politic si tracts written by Thomas Paine in defence of the position taken the revolutionary patriots as another proof of it. They had tbe effeet ol bringing bark tb* wavering to thn cau>e of their country, en couiaglng the tunid. sustaing the weak, and. finally, Ireeiug the laml from the dominion of a foreign tvrant ^ oliaire. Hotisseau, an<l the other great wri'erx of France, employed thfir pens as the be.t and most sue cessful means of disseminating liberal principle* and even at the preient day, we see what It i* doing, in free ?0? m:iDkin<i from the thraldom of tyrant*.
