I gence, that on the I llh.a dreadful earthquake took It place in that Island. The town of St. Pierre has 8 suffered greatly, but the destruction has been far a greater at Port Royal, in which town the namber of victims to this dreadful calamity is not less than roen wurDara. When theaonuline left, however, the entire extent of devastation produced by the d earthquake, had net been accurately escertained. Hundreds of plantatione onthe Island hbd been * utterlyldestroyed, and intelligence of new disasters a was continually pouring into the town. The following is an extract of a private letter t from St. Pierre, tinder date of the I2tlt. The Pauline being ready to sail, I transmit you I in great haste, a few details of the catastrophe we have just-experienced. Yesterday, on the 1th I inst., at 6 o'eloc, A. M., a very severe shock of an i r. earihquake was felt in this town. which lasted , about five minute, with the sameintensit. Many I of our houses have been torn and sihtteren tia pieces: amon others two in the station in which we reside, two individuals have been buried be neath the ruins of the latter. At Fort Royal the calamity is more frightful; from the news received thin morning, we learn that the num ber of victier.s already withdrawn from the ruins, amounts to more than THREE HUNDRED. Near ly all the houses in that town are destroyed. In short it is esid that this unfortunate city ituearly entirely over whelmed and destroyed. The whigs have triumphed. Mr. Henderson is a sensible man, who will do credit to hiestate in the Senate, and he is a thorough whig. He received a majority of 5 votes over his comnpetinor;Col. Bingamen receiving 2 vote, and' Mr. Aylesburry 2 votes-all four whige, giving a majority against the loceo foco candidate of 9.
