EARTIIQtlAKE.AT MARTtIIQUE. si The Paulinti which arrived on Saturday night, ft from St..Pierre, (Island of Martintque,) which she p. left on the Ith inet.i brings the.unpleasant intelli. I gence, that on the I llh.a dreadful earthquake took It place in that Island. The town of St. Pierre has 8 suffered greatly, but the destruction has been far a greater at Port Royal, in which town the namber of victims to this dreadful calamity is not less than roen wurDara. When theaonuline left, however, the entire extent of devastation produced by the d earthquake, had net been accurately escertained. Hundreds of plantatione onthe Island hbd been * utterlyldestroyed, and intelligence of new disasters a was continually pouring into the town. The following is an extract of a private letter t from St. Pierre, tinder date of the I2tlt. The Pauline being ready to sail, I transmit you I in great haste, a few details of the catastrophe we have just-experienced. Yesterday, on the 1th I inst., at 6 o'eloc, A. M., a very severe shock of an i r. earihquake was felt in this town. which lasted , about five minute, with the sameintensit. Many I of our houses have been torn and sihtteren tia pieces: amon others two in the station in which we reside, two individuals have been buried be neath the ruins of the latter. At Fort Royal the calamity is more frightful; from the news received thin morning, we learn that the num ber of victier.s already withdrawn from the ruins, amounts to more than THREE HUNDRED. Near ly all the houses in that town are destroyed. In short it is esid that this unfortunate city ituearly entirely over whelmed and destroyed. To augment if possible this sad calamity, the yellow fever commits terrible ravages. Am ong other victims is Mr. Lucotte,aid.de.eamp to the goverror. We subjoin the governor's proclamation for a copy of r., which we are indebted to the politeneas of the French consul. 'I PROCLAMATION -OF REAR-ADMIRAL, o5 GOVERNOR A. DE MOGES. CITIZENS OF FORT ROYA.:- You have been visited by a frightful misfortune. Your ris houses are overthrown; you seek beneath their ruins id, yourperent, your children, your friends. France and the king will soon learn this dreadful i ealamity and will come toyour aid. Is In the interim, let at those whose courage dos not fail Y. them, who pase mealy hear and strong arms, unite with the trrion end marine to li a free posage to the waters, It, to open the streets, to prop up Illthe buildings in danger of •r fallint, and thus prevent new mottbrtunes. The asutanee of the Kiangt goerniheat, together with that g of the olony who haes suffered les tha, yeuaselves, will not " be wasting, and yout will succour each other with your accus toomt d generosity. Citirone of lt. Plrre:..I have this moment learned that your city hu suffered greatly it cemmon with other part, of . the bland, aslmy erfonls shall h exerted to aid you in sustain 'It log and repairing your milrortunes. Fon Royel. Jan. . 19O . Rear Admiral Governor- A. DE MOGE.. .| .Mississippi Senato.r. John Henderson Erq. was elected on Wednesday last, Senator from the slate of Mississipp!. The whigs have triumphed. Mr. Henderson is a sensible man, who will do credit to hiestate in the Senate, and he is a thorough whig. He received a majority of 5 votes over his comnpetinor;Col. Bingamen receiving 2 vote, and' Mr. Aylesburry 2 votes-all four whige, giving a majority against the loceo foco candidate of 9. The Legislsture have confirmed the appointment by the Governorof the lion. Thos. II. William. as arns. torfor the unexpired term. Hasing the majority, we must confess the whige were generous. WAsnnteoros, Jan. 24. A, number of memorials weae presented in the Senate, among which was one praying permission to build the iron part of two Ameriean steamere in England. Mr. Benton introduced a bill repealing the duties on salt. Mr. Foster's bill amending the act surhorising Tennessee to issue grants and perfect titles to certain lands, and to settle claims to vacant and unappropriated land, within the seame, was taken up.nn its third reading, and ordered to be engrossed. The y.as and nays were ordered, and the bill passed. 34 to 3. The following are the yeas and nays upon the final passageof the duelling bill in the Senate. Yess-Messrs. Allen. Benton, Buchanan, Clay, of Ky., Davis, Foster, Fulton, Hubbard, Knight, Linnt, Lumpkin, McKean, Morris, Mouton, Niles, Pierce, Prentiss, Robins, Robinson, Ruggles, Santh of Cona., Smith of Ind., Southard, Switt, Tallmadge, Tipton, White, Williams of Me., Yourig-29. Nays-Mesers. Brown, Clay of Ala., King, Nicholas, Preston, Roane, Williams of Mi-7. In the House, Mr.Cambrellitg, on leave, made a report from the eommittee of Ways and Means on the subject of finances. The report, after reviewing the financial history of the Govern. ment from its organization to the present time, mates that in ease the appropriations in the Harbor and Fortifications bills are made by the House, some provision to the anmournt of lIve or six millions must be made to enable the Treasury to meet the demand. The report was laid upon the table and ordered to be prined. L tie Caolp, Forresa, ulrlnr last week, went through the characters of Othello, Damon, and Claude Melnotte. We did not see hi- Othelln but were told that it was a fine piece of acting. Hi Damnon acss good. He played theSyrceusan plhiltr sopher as, punbably, no other can represent him In the manly scenes wher Ire ep.rko his indigna. tron at the grovelling and corrupt spirit of hisi coluntrymen, his enoucintiont we. worthy of. senn tor. And in the tender puasagee with Calanthe and Hermtione, he was generally subdued, but most natural in the expression of the emotions wlich the situations cell for. The scene with Lucullus, who has slain hi hnhorseclled frth those phveiral energies whiclh are so admirably developed in MIr. Furrests person. We think he oas greatly improved in his style of acting. There is I, as display of his unmatched museular talent, and more effort to produce effect, by drawing ppon'the sympathy which nature elicita. We look upon Mr. Forresat' Claude Melnotte as tile nearest approach to the chlaracter that we have yet seen. II he be sople what too robust ior the young enthusiaast, t.e ale. geance and grace of his manner make amplt. amends-.ud without any unnatural testing at passion, where paesinn should be pourtrayed, tire intensity of feeling mantlrs hrs face and breatlhe from his whole frame. The devotedresr of the me aennot be more aptly depicted. Flow besuti fully be tells his love and deseribes the imaginary castle by the Lakeof Coms. There is gentleness and warmth and the ease or a gentleman, there is nothing eld or engraceful in his manner. He neither hangs his head like a sheepish boy, makes one knee fall in love with the other, or keeps his itlade forever clasped in so agony of unfeelingnees S! =n we Aeveene it, he seems to liooe all thnhlhta If other beinge, and there is another existence thal no that of Piuline and-the gardener's son. It is a v poeturo of a lover who has prospered in his suit, a nod who for the first time feels the breath of love w epon his cheekf We admire the play, and we to admire the pre ont cast of it. Mr. Btr it'e D ot mns cannot be matched. We do not believe any e onslse can play it after him; and Mrs. Brrett's , Paoline is even better on a renewed acqaintance ot than rememb, red. She enters into the character, and is Pauline. When Claude returns and finds it her about to wed another to save her father's credit. he does not see her bedizened out with lace it and costly gems, but showing that she hasfelther g widowhood, and is about to sacrifice herself, and a if goes not coldly of even reluetantly, but abhor. rently to the proposed bridal. She looke heart broken, a monument of sdness on which notone I ray of genial ennshine plays. We cannot qlose this article without expressing the most unqhali. fled admiration for MrsGreeneo oWidow Molnotte. There is a pathos and a truth, a life.likenes in the mother, whicl find the way directly to the heart. The one burst of feeling, when Claude acknowledges his shame, and declares his inten. lion to bid farewell.to home and friends foreverv 'Claude, Claude, you will not leave yonr poor old mother; she will not forsake you in your sorrrw, no not even in your guilt. Nothing can divorce a mother from her son."-we do not hblievecan be surpassed. It is natural, and seemslte gush up t, from the fountains of the heart. We muat, en a paessant, pay a tribute to Mrs. Greene's Cal rth.": 1. It was the hest we ever saw. True, she did not ik look quite young and beautiful enough for the e Syracusaan maiden; but she made up for the defit or ienejes by the excellence of her playing. or In Naval Engagements Barrett and Franklin to" long and short," are very diverting. r, Lest evening, Mr. Forrest appeared in theG'a. he diator, his own part, in which, had they a chance, d. we r!o not ibelieve any can equal him. an The distinguished Tragedian J. B. Booth, will ra appear in the character of Richard III on Thurs. day evening next, at the St. Charles. Our citizens or will then hate an opportunity of seeing "*the crooked backea tyrant" personated by the only 0u living representative of that arduous part. he Madame Augusta arrived on Saturday evening, h in the ship Nashville from N.Y. She will appear an st the St Charles, where the most beautiful ed danseuse in the union will have crowds to greet ny her. For some time pant, "the temple" as the St t lCharles is appositely styled, has been doing a oh Ia ndld busineas. - TnarnatcALr.--TIo benefit of Miss Tree at re St. Charles, on Saturday night, was a deserved v bumper. That excellent Comedy the Honey Moon, was strongly cast, and never was comedy we will venture to assert, better performed. Tile Ju- t liana of Miss Tree was chaste yet full of spirit, and we have not seen her in any part in which she af. forded us so much pleasure. Caldwell played as well as he did when playing was his profession, t instead of as now, his anmpsement. Full of life and vivacity, correct and elegant, J is. S. raown, as Rolando, was deservedly oppinuded. Next to Caldwell we have scarcely known a better come dinn. His dress and address, his reading, his man. nerp, and walk. are all studied, but he has the art to conceal his art. We cannot however refrain from giving him one little hint. When sitting at his table in hia conversation with Et.genio. his position was rather indelicate, unintetrin ally ao we doubt not, but actors should always be careful not to offend modesty. Tilo plcreding nnmbers have been characterired by much prneti. cal.good sense, and thtee is muclh food for relier. lion in the present; but we think the writer Is ocensionally too speculative, and takes his subject by the wrong horn. Our own opinions on the principle of free banking have been pretty fully Sgiven-indeed so fully that we do not feel inclined to repeat them here. It is a system which if pro. perly applied and guarded, must tend to the pros a perity of the country. It will make money more acsceessible to certain classes in the commnunty than it now is, and will place men more toi an equality in the various ramifications of trade and business. But it must not be suffered to run wild. Certain restrielions are necessary to constitute true and rational liberty, and so a guard is requisite to render the system of free banking void of those tnoxious influences which excess might induce. The principle is a plain one. The slate muot be secured. then issue her bonds, for which pro erty is pledged, and banking is done in the regularly way e by the individual or associations who Iave taken out the value of their capital in bonds. Every man cannot bank, nor can he become Itos own b onker. No banking aholuld be allowed on a capital of less than $200,t000. The charter should provide against all offences, a0o0 protect its provisions. The letlers of our correspondent have been read with interest; will he continue theol.? We do not wish him success--he is altogether too much of a radical for us. and unless a radical change takes place in its principles, we trust the Plnindealer mnty "bte born again" only to die a second time. We discover that you advocate theysrtem of Free Bankng in this Stute. It is a sahjrct of tmIch impt1r tanee, and if properly organized by the legirlntere, it a system that mtst pave extremely beneficial to the peopleat large. We have nut the Naw York law he lore us, ineither have we had an opportunitv o xan.i, lg it in its detsils. And what we shlall tffer on this head, must be con idered pretty much as thle result of our own reflections on the subject,-And if it shall lead to any practiena or isetu, hints on free banking, we salel reatsatisfied with the result. There can be no queslion. that if banking is found prfitaible to an ic.,rporated few, the citizens aof the comnonity generally, have a rielet to tit tartetciate in it beeefita aso for as is t:oneistent with ptblic safety.
