C. M. Jacrsoh, Philadelphia?Dear Sir: 1 have been a subject of Dyspepsia, in iu worst f^rm, for the last five years. Such was my condition for twelve months that ihe physicians and all who saw m ?aM I must die. While in this condition, I was carried to the watering places in Virginia, Tennes see and North Carolina, but wa? net benefited by any water to which 1 was taken. While on my way home, I stopped a week at Rntherfortton, a ^mal I village in North Caroluia, to try the effect of I some Chalybeate water in that place. About the !a?t of the week, I went into a drug store to pet some medicine for my ch.ld and myseif. There were several of the village physicians in the store, and one of them seemed to take some interest in my ea?e. and, after asking me some questions, said he hid been a dyspeptic, and had been greatlv bene fitted by the u?e of "Dr. Honfljnd'* German Bit ters," prepared by y~u, and he insisted thai I would try the Bitter# lie aI?o called the aext day at my room, and insisted so much that I would try them tkat r acked him to get me one bottle. He did it, and I commenced taking it as directed, and I do say 1 was more benefitted by it than all the water ami medicine 1 had ever taken. After reaching home one of my neighbors came to me for a prescription and medicine, (he a dyspep tic,) an l i gave him nearly all the Ditters I had left, wmeh effected mnch good in bis case. He has often called "n me for more of the same k nd of medi cine, saying he was uiore benefitted by it than any other he had taken, but 1 have not been able to get any more for him or myself since; will yon, there tore, please ship me a dozen or more as soon a* pos sible. THE LITTLE SISHSRS. 11 You were not here yesterday," said the gentle teacher of a little village school, as she placcd h?r hand kindly on the curly head of one of her pupils. It was i ecess time, but the little girl ad dressed had not gone to frolic away the ten minutes, not even left her seat, but sat absorbed in what seemed a fruitless attempt to make herself mistress of a sum in long division. Her face and neck crimsoned at the re mark of her teacher, but looking up she seemed somewhat reassured by tho kind glance that met her, and answered, "No^ma am, I was not, but sister Nelly ?? I remember there was a little eirl who called herself Nelty Gray, came in yesterday, but I did not kr.ow she was I your sister. But why did you not come ? You seem to love study very much." "It was not because I didn't want to, was the earnest answer, and then she paused, and the deep flush again I unged that fair brow ; ? but," she con tinued after a moment of painful embar rassment, " mother cannot spare boih of I us conveniently, and so we are going to I take turns. I m going to school one day and sister next, and to-night I'm to teach I Nelly all I have learnetTto-day, and to- [ morrow night she will teach me all she learns while here. It's the only way we can think of getting along, and we want to study very much, so as to Pome time keep school ourselves, and take care o! mother, because she has to work very I hard to take care of us." I With genuine delicac/ Miss M forbore to question the child further, but sat down lxside her, and in a moment I explained the rule over which she was I puzzling her young brain, so that the I difficult sum was easily finished. " You had better go out and take the I air a few moments, you have studied ven I hard to day," said the teacher, as tb I little girl put aside the slate. | Id rather not I might tear vxii I dress?I will stand by the window audi watch the rest." I Th#re was such a peculiar tone in the I voice of her pupil as she said, " I might tear my dress," that Miss M I led instinctively to notice it. It was nothing but a ninepenny print of a deei I hue, but it was neatly made, aud had never yet been washed. And while look-1 ing at it, she remembered that during the I whole fortnight previous Mary Gray had | attended school regularly, she had never I seen her wear but that one dress. " She I is a thoughtful little girl," said she to I herself, " and docs not want to make her I mother any trouble. I wish I had more such scholars." The next morning Mary was absent,! but her sister occupied her scat. Thcro I was something ko intoresting in the two I little sisters, the one eleveu years, and! the other eighteen months younger, agree-1 ing to attend schoM by turns, that Miss I M could not forbear observing I them very closely. They were pretty I faced children, of delicate forms, and I fairy-like hands and f*et?the elder with I dark, lustrous eyes and chestnut curls, I the other with orbs like the sky of June I ?her white neck veilad by a wreath of I golden ringiets. She observed in both! the same close attention to their studies: I and as Mary tarried withiu during the) the play time, so did Kelly; and upon I speaking to her as she had to her sister. I she received the same answer. "/ mi^ht I tear my dress." ' The remark caused Miss M to nc-1 tice the garb of her sister. She saw at I once that it was of the same piece as | Mary's, and upon scrutiniz:ng it very I closely, she became certain that it was I the same dress. It did not fit quite so I pretty on Nelly, and it was too long for her, and she was evidently ill at ease, I when she noticed her teacher looking at the bright pink flowers that were so thickly set on the white ground. The discovery was one that could not but interest a heart so benevolent as that which pulsated in the bosom of the vil lage school teacher. She ascertained the residence of their mother, and though sorely shortened herself by a narrow purse, that same night, having found at the only store in the place a few yards of I the same material, purchased a dress fori little Nelly, and ^ent it to her in such a way that the donor could not be detected Very bright and happy looked Mary Gray on Friday morning, as she entered the school at an early hour. She waited only to place hct books in neat order in her desk, ere she approached Miss M , and whispering in a voice that laughed in spite of her efforts to make it low and deferential: "After this week, sister Nel ly is coming to school every dav, and oh, I am so glad." "That is very good news," replied the teacher, kindly. "Nelly is fond of her books, I ste, and I am happy to know I that she can have an opportunity to! study them every day." Then she con tinued, a little good-natured mischiefen circling her eyes and dimpling her sweet lips: "But can your mother spare you both conveniently ?" "O, yes, ma'am, yes, ma'am, she can now. Something happened she didn't expect; she is as glad to have ua come as we are to do so." She hesitated a mo ment, but her young heart was filled to the brim with joy, and when a child is happy it is as natural to tell the cause as it is for a bird to warble when the sun bhines. So out of the fullness of her heart she spoke and told the teacher this little story. She and her sister were the onlv chil dren of a very poor widow, whose "With was so very delicate that it was almost impossible to support herself and daugh-1 ters. She was obliged to keep them out I of school all winter, because they had no clothes to wear, but she told them that if they could earn enough by doing old chores for the neighbois to buy each of ?? ... - * * * them a new dress, they might go in the spring. Very earnestly and carefully she horded the copner coins, which usually repaid them. lhey had each nearly saved enough to buy a new calico dress when Nelly was taken sick, and so as the mother had no money before head her own money had to be expended in the purchase of mcdicine. 4<0, I did feel so bad when school opened and Nelly could not jro," said Mary. "I told mother I wouldn't ro either, but she said I had better for T could teach sister some and that would be bett< r than no schooling I stood it tor a fortnight, but Nelly s little face ?Cecmed all the time looking at me on the way to school, and couldn't he happy a bit, so I fina'ly thought of a way by which wc could both go, and I told mo ther I would come one day, and the next I would lend Nelly my dress and she might come, and that's the way we hare done this week. But last night, don't you think, somebody sent sister a dress just li-\e mine, and now she can come too. O, if I only kmrw wba it was, I would get down on rFty knees and th?nk them and so would Nelly. But we don't know, and so we've done all we could for them, we've prayd for them? and O, Miss M , we are so glad now. Ain't you, too ?'? Indeed I am,' was the emphatic an swer. And when on the following Mon day little Nelly, in the new pink dress, entered the school room, her face radiant as a rose in sunshine, and approaching the teacher s table, cxclairnea, in tones as musical as those of a froe fountain, " 1 atn S?ing to school every day, and I am so glad!" Miss M felt as she had never done before, th?t it is more blessed to give than receive. No mil lionaire, whan he saw his name in the public prints, lauded for his thousand dollar charities, was ever so happy as ihe poor school teacher who wore her glores half a summer longer than she ought, and thereby saved enough to buy khat little fatherless girl a calico dress. How to r.rr Asleep.?Nothing is more common among sedentary persons espe cially, than what is termed watchfuln-w, or inability to get asleep is more courted. To break up this painful and health-d*. stroying habit or condition and ensom slumber when desired, a thousand reme dies have been tried by the suft'erers, and successively abandoned as ineffectual. Such, at least, was our experience, and we had given up in despair, when were advised by our ingenious family physician, Professor Orrin Smith, to trv counting backwards. We did r.o aid found it a perfict remedy. Let wakeful person begin with one hundred, backward, as 100, 99,98, 97, , and we will venture the assertion that Dot one in ten making the experiment will ever get back into the teens, before fall ing fast asleep. But should one hun dred fail, let him try two, three, four or five hundred, and w'e will answer fjr the success of the experiment in the mcsz hopeless cases; for we do not believe there is a person in Vermont who, unless ex ercised by some acute pain, can lav abed in the stillness of the night, and'count 500 backwards, without losing him^lf in ix>und sluinb?rs. 1 he philosophy of this is plain enough to us. This process, which car.^t t e carried on by rote, as counting the usu al way, requires just enough of the con stant exertions of the mind to break up the harrassing chain of thought and attendant irritation of feeling which caus es the wakefulness, but not enough to indispose us to the sleep we are coveting. Try it, fellow sufferers, for it may be with you as it has proved to us. as" sim ple as it may appear, a very important discovery.?Green Mountain freeman. The Late Chaeles Mattheh s.?The following amusing anecdote of the cele brated Charles Matthews, comedian, waa forwarded to the editors of the New York Atlas by a correspondent who hails from the Astor House: Sir?The following impromptu of Mr. Charles Mathews, the celebrated come dian, may, perhaps, be worthy of a cor ner in your paper. Mr. Berry, a trades man in the Strand, London, hearing that Mr. Matthews was in pecuniary diffi culties. sent him in his bill before it was due; whereupon Mr. M. immediately waited on him, and commenced as fol lows : 44 You have sent in your bill. Berry, (billberry,I before it was due, Berry, (dewberry;) and in making it out Sou have made a great mull, Beny, (mul erry.) You are a great goose, lkrry, (gooseberry,) and I don't care a Rtraw, Berry, (strawberry,) and am not going to be troubled by a whim, Berry, (whim? berry;) and if you give me any of your impertinence, I will make your eyes black. Berry, (blackberry.) and for two pins. I would kick you, Berry, and led ihim looking very like a green Berry. Yours, respectfully, H 0. OaxLAUDa. The pleasant German custom of celebrating the "silver wedding," was introduced in New York, recently, by the wife of one of our leading auctioneers, who commemorated the 25th anniversary of her marriage by giving a splendid en tertainment, inviting her guests to appear either in masquerade, fancy, or civic dress. As the larger portion erf the com Cny appeared in disguise, the etlect was th picturesque and amusing. Many of the characters assumed were admirably sustained ; and brothers and sisters, hus bands and wives, were puaaled to know who they belong to. At the supper ta ble the masks were all removed, when several gentlemen found they had been flirting with their sisters, making love to their mothers, and for once playing the agreeable to their wives.
