The California Chronicle, of the 7th of March, publishes a letter from a man signing himself A. Seymour Smythe. It was written to a merchant in San Fran cisco, who, on the strength of the state ments?after the manner of the Arabian Tales, in our opinion?sold out his stock of goods at a very low price, with the express intention of going, like Mahom med, to the mountain. Only think?a gold boulder, worth from two to ten mil lions of dollars! The writer says in the course of his statement: u."a} hiad ,P.icked waJ for some minutes, hardly looking at the rock, when all at once I observed a little gold in it. I jumped up, and, by Jupiter ! the whole boulder-about ten feet high and wide, and twice as long?was lousy with gold! In one side there was a place about two feet square where the quartz was richer than any I ever saw in the San Francisco assay ofhee. I picked out ?20 with my knife in half an hour. I danced like a crazy man, and if I had not been afraid 1 would have yelled worse than a thou sand Indians at a war dance. I can't liken my feelings to anything I ever felt on earth. At first T felt scared at the thought of how rich I would be, and m, heart rose in my throat; then I felt as though I had been chased bF the Devil and had managed to get inside of Heav en 8 gate just as Satan was about to catch me by the coat-tail. It was not | Ion; before I got over my happy sp?ll. I had no money-no tools; provisions were high ; I had no friends and no ac quaintances ; I ate my hare, and stayed at the rock thinking until it was too late U> go home. It got cold; I laid down and tried to sleep, but cculd not; I got up, and walked back and forth' J thinking, all night. It was a terrible, miserable night. " In the nrorning, when the sun shone upon the rock, I was happy again. 1 es timated its value at not less than two possibly eight, or eighteen millions of dollars it might even be! Now, Bob, don t laugh at me. I was desperately wild with joy. I, who had been a dreamer and a poor devil so long, was to be rich ! to be a king! to be able to cai r<F eIecuti?n doling schemes which have so often brought the ridicule of the stick-in the-muds upon m; ! A number of Germans who were engaged in cutting wood, had concluded their labors for the day, and while passing peaceably along towards their homes, one of the party named Val entine Fillinger, remarked that he would like to kill some one, and taking a knife from his pocket, he stabbed a man by the name of |Fox in the arm. Fox started to run, and Killmger coming up with him, dealt another blow, which inflicted a dangerous wound in the back of the ncck. Fox then fell to the ground, and Fillinger deliberately cut his throat from ear to ear, causing immediate death. Fillin ger then turned to the rest of hia com panions, and defied them to approach him, threatening any of them with death if they should attempt to arrest him. The perpetrator of this foul deed h?s! thus far escaped the vigilance of the offi cers, although the most strenuous efforts have been put forth to bring him to jus tice. An inquest was held over the body of the deceased, and a verdict rendered in accordance with the facts. Fillinger is represented to be a dangerous charac ter, having previously maliciously in flicted a severe wound on another party. It is to be hoped that he will be over taken by the law, and receive that re ward which his misdemeanors deserves. , [Batimore American. The Wat Youkq Placide, the actor, was once applauded in an extraordinary manner, the following will show. We would advise our readers not to laugh at the incident which is thus related: a lauj, a f Orleans public, was performing on the same evening, it being for her "benefit." At the close of the performance, she was called out, and bouquets, and other and more costly tokens of approval, were lib erally bestowed upon her. Nerwas Mr. Placide not remembered. He was enthu siastically applauded in an afterpiece: and while he was engaged in his part, amidst applause, something very bright came whizzing and flashing upon the stage, passing only a little distance above his head, and going through a scene iii the rear of the stage, and disappearing from view. "Turn him out! turn him out!" said a hundred voices at once; and the vocif erators looked up to the quarter of the house whence the missile, or whatever it was, bad proceeded. But at length all was still, and the play proceeded to the end without inter ruption The man who had created the disturbance was removed, (struggling, to-be-sure, but simply remonstrating without other resistance.) As Mr. Placide was in his un-dressing room, preparing to leave the theatre, a man appeared at the stage-door, inquiring for him. "Show the gentleman up," said Mr. Placide. And up he came. I "Play-side," said he, almost with tears I in his eyes?for be was in a maudlin I mood?"Play side, you have always been I a great favor-t7e of mine?always. Now I I've been cruelly treated here to-night. I and I was determined not to go home till I I had seen you, and told you about it? I for, Play-side, you have always beon a great favor-tfe of mine." "But. my friend, what is your cause 1 of complaint ? Who has insulted you ?" "Well, you see, when I see 'em throw ing flowers, and diamond-pins, and little pocket-books down to tbat pretty Mrs.! H thinks I, I'll throw something to Piay-side, for he's my favorite; and I did I throw it!" I "What was it ?** said Placide, havingl an inkling of a curious explanation. "Why, it was my best chiscl. I am a| cabinet-maker, and I'd had it put in first I rate order, and 'twas handy in my pock-1 et; and I sent it, 'cause you was ahvaya I a favor-of mine, Play-side ! If it had I beeu three times as good a one youl should ha' had it, 'cause you was always! a favor-?7e of mine!" Placide says he like? cordial applause, I but he doesn't want it to come "full! chisel!" Last Hours of a Lbgislatt**.?The New Orleans Commercial Bulletin sptakn in the following terms of the closing scene of the Louisiana Legislature: "We learn that the saturnalia which usually accompanies the adjournment of the Legislature far exceeded in wild ex cesses any that ever before were wit nessed. The Legislative Hall was like a drinking saloon, the scene of drunken orgies which would hare astonished even the habitues oT ihose disorderly bouses. The master of misrule was let loose, and allowed to run riot. Officers, members, pages, servants and outsiders were on an equal footing, and the scene would have symbolized the grand feature of pure de mocracy?perfect equality?KaH there not been a master spirit among them, ru ling them with despotic and arbitrary sway. Sardinian Emigrants? The Com missioners of Emigration have received a proposition from the Venezuelan Consul, the intention of which is to relieve the City from the burden of supporting the Sardinians who recently arrived at this port. The Consul, aware that able bodied men are in demand in the region which he represents, proposes to ship the exiles to Venezuela, and so to remove them from all charges upon our treasu ry, provided that the Commissioners will pay $25 per head, as the price of their passage. It is estimated, however, that all the lame, halt, blind, and improper, are to be excluded from these offers The Commissioners show a desire to be rid of these people, but will not dispose of a part. 1 he Consul has vet to answer the' counter proposal.?N. A "Lkathir Mkdal."?This sort of testimonial is certainly no longer a myth or an untried experiment, for one of quite elaborate finish and decorations was ac tually presented yesterday, to a promi nent member of the House of Representa tives, in the name of his "constituents/' who it is claimed have been greatly edi fied by his legislative acumen, and in this manner desired to christcn him as the "Chief Bunthoon." Out of delicacy to the well known intense modesty of the parties, and the exquisite taste of the classic and unique testimonial, we sup press all names* connected with this re markable historical transaction, in the belief that the hnrdness of the one side of movement is fully offset by th? softness of the other.?Boston Transcipt. Slanderer.?A person of whom the Greeks showed a deep appreciation, when they made the word ojnonjmous with evil. Slanderers are at all events econom ical, for they make a little scandal go a great way, and rarely open their mouths except at the expense of other people. We must allow that they have a good ex cuse for being defamatory, if it be their object to bring down others to their own level. O? On Sunday last a man in Albany, New York, replenished his fire-place with a hickory back log, and after it becamc pretty well ignited, it gave forth strange noises, hissing and snapping as though an extraordinary frying was going on. The peculiar noise attracted attention from all present, and on taking the stick off it was found to be hollow, and the baked remains of a black snake, appa rently some three feet in length, lymg inside. 3^7* Looking over other people's af fairs and overlooking our own is termed curiosity.
