It makes real estate to e supply the amount of moneyed capital equal to its val ue. In New York and Massachusetts and Penusylva im nia and and Mississippi and our own state, real estate is made instrumental in raising capital to supply the wants existing in the community. for which otherwise there wouldb no remedy. Free Banking is only a Co still further application of this excellent provision. tht whieh should have been incorporated in all banking in- he atiutt:ons. There call be no better securities than real m estate securities, and luans on real estate are sometimes absolutely necessary to a community which could not a l ind relief, without resorting to them. BOGOTA IN I 83-'7-being a narrative of an eeapedi. tion to the Capital of New Granada, and a residence there of eleven months, by J. Steuart, New York, Hlar per &'lrotherr, 1838.-This unpretending work is full of variety and incident. It ts precisely what it claims to be, and is written in a clear, forcible and agreeable style. WVe quote the following paragraph as a speci men 8f the descriptive powers of the author. "The moment we entered upon this delighttul stream, the chan-e of scenery and associations was io atantaneous, and produced a magically pleasing effect. Within less than two miles up, the river narrows nearly one half. Neat little rosas line the shore at short and regular intervals, and the inhabitants appeared much better off and lore cleanly clad than on the Magdalena. A fine, bright pebbly shore reminded me much of the banks of the silvery Tweed. After advatcing two miles farther, tile shores rove to aIheight of eight hundred or a thousand ieot, aid, jutting in fromc the left-hand bank barely twenty paces, we gained the foot of a vory pictu resque waterfall, foaming and tumbling over a preci pice of several hunIlred feet. But, with all our exer tions, we could not reach'the asutnut, as the sheet of water occupied nearly all tile channal, and on either sid. were deep and elippery rocks; while farther on rose a thick forest, with undorwood en matted and iompne. trable an to defy all atlempts to enter it. So, after ma ny fruitleas endeavours, we were fain to seat ourselves quietly down beside the basin at the foot, and enjoy the luxury of gazing upward and around upon such scenes ry as is rarely to le seen, and drinking in the delicious breeze created by the rust of waters. Journeying on ward, the river became in many parts very shallow, and slight rapids ; the lofty perpendicular shores entirely excluding the sun's rays, although at the hour of ele ven A. i. We observed tracks of the danta on the white sands. It is just such haunts as these that this tiimdiu monster loves to trequent; so still atd lonely! For here were no habitations ; not a sound save the dise. d tent mulmour of the water-fall we had just left, the wild, soft notes of the birds, and the dwep, prolonged rchoes of our voices, as they died away among the ever. lasling hdis." It is tI - really painful to witness the immense docket, and it the crowded audience every Monday morning that I assembles, of lawyers and suitors, eagerly watch- I ing ii there is a court to proceed with the public business; and it is more, painful, lwhen after a few f minutes silting the whole assembly disperses and the :ourt adjourns, without doing any thing of con sequence. Thus matters pase off from week to week. In the meantirme the docket aeccumlates in atenfold proportion to its reduction. The clam ors of suitors and the complaints of members of the bar are loud and increasing but they pass off more unheeded than the idle, wind. Is there no remedy ? Will the Legislature not applya speedy cure for this dreadful malady in the Judiciary ? It is high time that something was done, "Hope deferred maketh the heart sick." This court has p. been for some time lingering and the pntalie inter. ests have suffered much. The member of the at, bench who has retired saw this, and being no longer lotr able to sustain his office and the court, gave it up 'to to the power that bestowed it. at- We sincerely trust the Legislature will take this re impqrtant matter into their consideration and np tho ply the proper remedy. From the many great and mighty matters that daily come before'the Supreme a Court, justice and public utility and policy require inn. that it be made to consist of five Judges, of the in- best talents, and attainments the statenan com. ranal mend. The Louisville Reporter of the 21st says:-the steamboat Lexington is fast on the rocks nearly op. posite Wall street; the Bonaparte was yesterday engaged in taking'out het Ireight. Counterfeits.-We learn from the Lonisville Journal that a number of the small notes, of the Illinois and Kentucky banks, changed into fives and tensr, have been recently put in circulation in that city. The editor remarks: We saw a two dollar note of the State Bank of Illinois which had been changed into a ten. The process con eisted simply of pasting the figures 10, cut from a 10 nots, ever the figure 2 of the l$ note, and defacing the two last letters of the r" two" in the centre of the note. The cheat may be easily dc. tected by looking through the note with the back towards you, or even by cgrefully examining its face. AcctnENT.-We learn from the Missouri Ga. zetre, that as the Favorite was coming to the wharf, where a number of persons were waiting to go on board, she struck the wharf with such violence as to break one corner of it down, causing it to sink, by which several persons were rather un. ceremoniously precipitateed into the water, and one or two of them, we learn, severely injured. As the wharf was covered with iron, mach of which fell in, some fears were entertained of its having fallen on some persons, and thius prevented them Ironm rising; but as we have not hoeard of any one being missing, we hope this maiy not bhe y the case. The Louisville Journal says: On tihe 3d inet. three individuals started from Madison, Ia. on skates with the intention of skating downto I.ouisville. After they ihad Sproceeded about 10 miles, and while running very fast. is one of them passed through the ice and disappeared. i Our informant, one of the three, says, that the unfortu Snate individual was a doctor. lHe was under the im 1preseior that he was from Columbus, Ohio. I KentuLcky and Ohio.-The Cincinnati Republican of 0 the 19th says: The lion. Messrs. Jas. T. It Monarch, which arrived here fromt Louisville yesterday. By the Monarch we learn that the weather above is exceedingly cold, and the river receding very rapidly. Tee ALston.-This excellent miseellaneous pe. riodicoal needs no recommendation from us. It has become a slandard among reprints and literr. ries. We are reqnested to say, that any person wishing to subscribe for the Albion will please d'. reet for James G. Mountaint, pos'.flice, or to the care of Mr. Alien at the Gas Worke, New Orleans. The young gentleman who has so recently become a Mlieissippian, and hauled up at Vicksburg, is ratller severe upon us in the Whig. Well, he dont know every thing. Ellen n2ee-J.hir. Haller-Kate O'Brien. It is not a pleasure to us to be compelled to sit through that mawkish piece of sentimentality, The Stranger. We rarely visit the Theatre, when it is the card. It is one of those plays that should have found its way from the stage, long since. The appetite must be gross in tihe extreme, which consents to be pleased wilh its frequent repetition. The whole ground-work is revolhing to good taste and delicate perceplion. A misonthrope, soured against the world and raoiling against its treachlery and heartlessness, becausethe wife of his bosom wasseduced from her affections, by a pretended friend; and the frail one pictured so contrite and enlisting sympathy for sorrows brought on by crime-it is not n theme fit for thie stage. We visited the Theatre because Ellen Tree was to play, and we were not averse to seeing her in the round of characters she personates. We have felt anxious to place a proper estimate upon her performances. We have desired to be wholly ex. empt from the intluence of the glare which fame has thrown around her, and we have had an equal wish to ascribe nil the praise we believed she justly .merited. Our criticism has been fair and honest, whatever may have been its correctness or incur. rectnesa. Her lady like manner& the extreme neat. Iness & elegance of her dress. & her knowledge of the autihor, all combine to make Ellen Tree a pleas. e igactress. She sealways pleasing to us, except i when we think she might make more of a character Slthan ste has made oIf it. Site is never towering. That coldness, of which we have complained, and the reserve and softness with which she inm bua s her impersonations, prevent her rising to that greatness that at once netonishes and overwhle' me. "'hoe nearest approach to this excellence, grandeur rioe may call it, was In it1o part ot Julia, when she r warns .Master Walter. that sonme how or other the hated nuptials must be avoided, end the finale of the Stranger, when the feelings of the outheruare entirely carried away at the sudden appearance of thr clildreno from whlom she has been so long separated. We saw a number of dewy e)ye, aInd one large gentleman inl particular, who ut in a box to the right of the front entrance, and who used a blue kerchief, struck us as having found Ssmethling peculiarly effecttng. The pleasant little comedy of Perfection iae played with Ellen Tree as Kate O'Brien. Shq played it ver sro-,iesh. We have seen more made of the caractner by those who have non right in the puhlt'es mind to rank wnthin five degrees ofher, and her '*Zrtch'd \V atrcr." was nny thing but cal. culated to aweakolo the raptures exhibited by el Charles. Don't sing it any more-it is a dilmult - song, and is a silly thing. We ad.i don't sing- 17 we mean do.,'t try that aogin. Mr. Ii[3ro n would have ematedrl the part of Charles Paragon with his tsucl excellence, but lie gave us a little too much of it. He is certainly ex. - tremely easy, a.d free from every thingclik con. wit straint, but we could have dispensed with a liule , of Ihe Cockney, for the simple reason that.we thought it out of character, and we ae certain that the author of the farce had no hand in producing - it. There were some scenesof J R Scoutte Stran ger that were very feelingly portrayed-especially when he exelaims "villian of what a wonman heat thou robbed me!' Jam sals. J. B. Booth.-It will be seen from the annexed let ter that this ditinguished actor will be in New Orleans at in a few days, and that he will go through a round of Is characters in which he has won his reputation.
